This is a first floor landing of a family house in Hampstead, North London. The client had recently seen a production of The Pearl Fishers and being set, as it is, in 19th century Ceylon, wanted to capture something of its exotic and tranquil nature. I kept my palette simple, using sepia tones and strived to achieve a soft flowing rhythmic feel to the composition of the landscape. To harmonise the space I decided to paint the floorboards as well, evoking well worn flagstones. |
